Reader Question: What’s the Best Way to Ease Suffering?

From Kathy Berken: What do you think is the best way for a person who is not working in the field to help alleviate the suffering of the poor?

Hi Kathy,
As you know, to fundamentally change the life of poor people isn’t easy. A lot of the people we help, are still, at the end of the day, really poor. We help make their lives better. But compared to any Westerner, they are still living rough lives. From what I’ve seen, microfinance projects can really make a difference. Also, education programs make a big difference, as they affect the trajectory of kids’ lives. Any program that helps maternal mortality, to me, is important. Because when kids don’t have moms, their lives inevitably go down hill. Quickly.

Kathy, there’s no silver bullet. Donate. Invest in a trip to Africa. See for yourself. You won’t regret it.

Thanks for your question,
Lane Hartill, CRS West Africa
