El Salvador’s Highland Gardens

José Alfredo Amaya works in his family’s garden plot in the highlands of El Salvador. With help from Catholic Relief Services, the small mountain community banded together to top the terrain surrounding their homes with heavy loads of fertile soil. Thanks to the program, families in these impoverished, highland communities now supplement their meals with the corn, turnips, cucumbers, tomatoes, cilantro, and green beans they planted on fertile soil.
