CRS Marks 5 Years in Herat, Afghanistan

Vicel Meregillano-Hicks, the wife of CRS Afghanistan country representative Paul Hicks, has been blogging about her experiences and recently sent us a posting about the celebration of the 5th anniversary of CRS in Herat. With her pharmaceutical background, Vicel has lent her support to CRS’ health programs — including first aid and CPR training, hygiene and sanitation promotion, and water quality testing. She is also a yoga enthusiast and has created a Yoga studio in the cozy CRS international staff living quarters.

Here is a snippet of her blog posting:

Over 220 Afghan national staff, 12 international staff, 5 major programs and numerous projects implemented in three provinces (soon to be 4 with the opening of the Bamyan office) and people are oblivious to what their colleagues are doing within CRS itself. To celebrate, the entire CRS Afghanistan team gathered at the Five Star Hotel in Herat City to get a sense of the goals and strategy of CRS in Afghanistan and the scale and scope of the organization in the country. All the departments and the programs prepared market-stalls to highlight the work that they are doing. The sense of wonder and pride at the capacity and sophistication of the organization — their organization — was obvious.

I, too, was filled with pride. I am glad to be a part of this team. CRS Afghanistan is growing and it will continue to do so because the need in this country is immense. It will take many, many years and many more dedicated people to be able to bring about the kind of change that CRS envisions.
