Caritas President Joins Poverty Summit

Caritas Internationalis President Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga will join world leaders at the United Nations Headquarters on September 25 to discuss ways to lift millions of people out of poverty.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited Cardinal Rodriguez to summit on Millennium Development Goals.

Drawn up in 2000, the development goals aim to significantly reduce poverty by 2015. Despite progress, current projections show goals in some countries are in peril, especially many in Africa. Climate change and the global food crisis threaten the success of development efforts.

Caritas said the summit will give world leaders an opportunity to track progress and commit to supplying resources to achieve goals in at-risk areas.
