Caritas Leader Hails Hillary Clinton Congo Visit

Anticipating US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s upcoming visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesley-Anne Knight, the secretary general of Caritas Internationalis, calls for peace talks in this Huffington Post article.

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 164 Catholic social service agencies around the world, including CRS.

Knight notes that in the Congo rape is increasingly being used as a “weapon of war”. She says the country’s ongoing conflict has forced the displacement of hundreds of thousands and disrupts urgent humanitarian aid.

“I urge Secretary Clinton to use her visit to do everything within her power to get the leaders of the Congo, Uganda and Rwanda (the countries of origin of the rebel groups involved in the war) to sit down together and hammer out a lasting peace,” Knight says in the article.
